What is Court Marriage?

Court marriage is a civil marriage registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 in India. It is a legally recognised marriage that does not require any religious ceremony. The marriage is solemnised in the presence of the Marriage Officer (a government official) and three witnesses. Once registered, the couple receives an official Marriage Certificate which is valid across India and internationally.

Court marriage in India is governed by the Special Marriage Act, 1954. This law allows any two Indian citizens to marry regardless of religion, caste, or community. It also applies to NRIs and foreign nationals marrying in India. The marriage is registered at the office of the Marriage Officer, which in Delhi falls under the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office.
